In an epic live webcast Tuesday, October 12, Louisville, Kentucky band My Morning Jacket will take over the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City for a Live on Letterman performance that will drench the famous venue in the group’s trademark echoing choruses, thrashing and tapping guitars, and driving beats. And best of all you can soak up this monstrous event live as it happens, by tuning into CBS.com on Oct. 12, beginning at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT).

Over the years, critics have compared My Morning Jacket to a vast array of artists including the Flaming Lips, Neil Young, The Band, The Allman Brothers, Prince, and even The Beach Boys. But now, 12 years and five albums into their career–not to mention numerous EPs, demo collections, and live recordings, plus performances at high-profile venues like Madison Square Garden and festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo–they truly own their own sound.
Led by the charismatic Jim James and filled out in its current lineup by bassist Tom Blankenship, drummer Patrick Hallahan, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Carl Broemel, and keyboardist Bo Koster, My Morning Jacket is cited by almost anyone who’s experienced them in person as the best live band working today. The stage, however, isn’t the only place the group shines; the creativity James and crew bring to their recordings is equally intense. In one example, the guys recorded their 2003 album It Still Moves in an empty grain silo, to capture the natural reverb of James’ voice. And they recently began recording what will be their sixth studio album (to be released sometime in 2011) in an old church in Louisville.

Over the past decade, My Morning Jacket has grown from being the group music lovers frequently touted to one of the preeminent rock bands in America. In 2008, they graced the covers of Spin and Rolling Stone, performed a staggering four-hour set at Bonnaroo, and appeared on Saturday Night Live, debuting tracks from Evil Urges, an album that wound up on an impressive number of album-of-the-year lists.

Taking a break from the process of recording their new album, the guys in My Morning Jacket are giving back to their fans with a one-of-a-kind Live on Letterman performance from the famed stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater. It’s definitely a rock ‘n roll moment you won’t want to miss.
