This Date in History: David Bowie’s First Public Performance

In 1965 a man named David Jones decided that he didn’t want to be confused with another singer named Davy Jones, the one that went on to be a Monkee. So, after careful consideration and much respect for American frontiersman and knife enthusiast Jim Bowie, David Jones became David Bowie. On this date in 1965 he made his first public performance as David Bowie, but he wasn’t singing.
David Bowie’s first public performance was as a mime in a London Park promoting his band David Bowie and the Lower Third.
