“Back On The Chain Gang” was originally about Chrissie Hynde‘s boyfriend at the time, Ray Davies of the Kinks. But tragedy struck the band in the form of the loss of one of its members and the song became a tribute to him.

Vinyl Vineyard: The PretendersChrissie Hynde: Fighter for…The Pretenders lost guitarist James Honeyman-Scott to a drug overdose in 1982. He was just 26 years old.

The song “Back On The Chain Gang” is dedicated in his memory.
