Vinyl Vineyard: Nick Lowe

Nick Lowe’s “Cruel To Be Kind” was a big song for him in 1979, but he’s written many other songs including one that went on to be a hit for Elvis Costello. What song was it?
We featured “Cruel To Be Kind” on today’s Vinyl Vineyard. The 1979 song has been covered a number of times by various artists. Letters To Cleo covered it for the 1999 movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Hear that version here.
The original by Nick Lowe was a successful song both in his native England as well as the US. The video for the song was one of the first to air on MTV. This is the original video:
“What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding” is a song of Lowe’s originally release in 1974 by the band Brinsley Schwarz, of which Lowe was a member.
Elvis Costello’s version of the song was released in 1979. Rolling Stone Magazine in 2004 placed the Costello version #284 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all-time.
