He calls himself Benny the Jukebox and say what you will – he is very talented. There’s no way you’ll make it thru all 6 plus minutes of this video, unless you are really bored. As a bonus, there are helpful captions to help you identify the songs. Sadly, I admit that I did play a lot of these songs at certain clubs in the 90s and I still have the vinyl.

It’s a small world after all, but this ”new-waver” never imagined that the Wonderful World of Disney would one day merge with the forlorn, shoegazing world of Joy Division. While most people only know one song by the band, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, everyone knows Mickey Mouse. However, a new t-shirt that featured the band’s signature album cover and Mickey’s famous ears has been pulled from the shelves but is now selling on Ebay for more than $300.

The 1979 record Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division was made into official Disney merchandise but was pulled from the shelves after copyright issues became apparent. I’m pretty confident that the model has never heard of Joy Division.

One-Hit Wonders: Kajagoogoo And “Too Shy”

With a name like Kajagoogoo, it had to be good. At least once, anyway.

Yes, it’s true that Kajagoogoo had a string of Top-25 hits in the UK (and was popular in Germany and the Netherlands for the better part of two years). But in the US, they were a bona fide one hit wonder, their lone charting song being “Too Shy.”

Released in January 1983, the song was produced by Colin Thurston and Nick Rhodes (of Duran Duran) for the band’s White Feathers LP. Thanks to heavy rotation on MTV, the song managed to climb all the way to #5 by July that same year.

Posthumously, the song was voted as one of the 100 Greatest Songs of the ’80s by VH-1, is also on their Top 100 One-Hit Wonders list and has appeared in Grand Theft Auto and the Sims.

The band’s name, by the way, is a variation on the a babies first words — gaga, googoo — or, in the case of my kid, “please pass the Tabasco.”

“Back On The Chain Gang” was originally about Chrissie Hynde‘s boyfriend at the time, Ray Davies of the Kinks. But tragedy struck the band in the form of the loss of one of its members and the song became a tribute to him.

Chrissie Hynde: Fighter for…The Pretenders lost guitarist James Honeyman-Scott to a drug overdose in 1982. He was just 26 years old.

The song “Back On The Chain Gang” is dedicated in his memory.

Ben Folds Five Together Again For New Album

Can you believe that we have not heard anything new from Ben Folds Five since 1999?! They are back together and recording a new album. Well, you know their huge hit ‘Brick’, but they had so much other good stuff, then the group called it quits 2000, right before Ben Folds went out to do his own solo thing.

On Twitter @BenFolds announced the group was in the studio recording and even posted a pic. “It’s happening fo sho – Day 1 in studio with Robert and Darren through March#NewBenFoldsFiveRecord“

Daily Rewind: The Cars

This band from Boston dotted the 80′s with some of its most memorable music and videos. But it was with the help of a local radio DJ that the band was able to get the attention of a record label and eventually get signed.

The Cars sent a mix tape to a DJ at a radio station in Boston who began playing “Just What I Needed” in rotation. Soon, others at the station were playing it and this is what caught the attention of the record label. The Cars signed with Elektra Records in 1977 – and the rest, as they say – is history.

Today we featured the song “Dangerous Type”, from the album Candy-O.
